How funeral preplanning works, step by step

From the first phone call to the day your family needs it, here is everything that happens, in order. Reading it is free, and nothing here signs you up for anything.

  1. A phone showing the acorn logo between two chat bubbles

    Step 1

    Call or message Billy

Start with a free planning call, in English or Spanish. Billy explains how preplanning works and answers your questions. Nothing is decided on the first call, and there is no obligation.

Call (323) 393-5077 or use the contact form.

  2. Two people talking across a kitchen table with papers and coffee

    Step 2

    Meet where you are comfortable

Billy meets you at your kitchen table, by phone or video, or at Inglewood Cemetery Mortuary. Bring anyone you want in the conversation. Many people bring a son, daughter or spouse.

Helpful to have: the names and phone numbers of the people who should be called, and any wishes you have already written down.

  3. A checklist on a clipboard next to a casket and an urn

    Step 3

Choose the service and the casket or urn

You decide the details: viewing or not, a chapel or church service, music, readings, who speaks, and the casket or urn. Prices come from the funeral home's General Price List, and you see them in writing before you sign anything.

Browse the casket catalog ahead of time if you like.

  4. A policy document with an acorn seal next to a shield with a check mark

    Step 4

Fund it with a small policy

A Homesteaders Life Company life insurance policy is set up to pay for the plan you chose. The funeral arrangement and the policy are separate documents, and Billy explains both. Homesteaders Life offers flexible payment options. California residents 65 or older receive a written disclosure before buying.

    How the funding works

  5. Two family members next to a green folder holding the written plan

    Step 5

Your plan is written down and on file

You keep copies of the plan and the policy, and the funeral home keeps the arrangement on file. Tell your family where your copy is. Billy stays your contact if your situation or your wishes change.

  6. A family member making a phone call to the funeral home

    Step 6

When the time comes, your family makes one call

Your family calls Inglewood Cemetery Mortuary and Billy. The funeral home works from the plan you made, so no one has to guess what you wanted. The policy and the carrier's own process decide how the claim is paid; we do not promise a timeline.

What it costs to find out

Nothing. The planning call is free, the meeting is free, and you can stop at any point. Billy will never tell you to cash out a retirement account, CD or annuity to pay for a plan.
