Caskets, urns and funeral merchandise
Choosing merchandise is one of the hardest parts of a funeral to do in a hurry. Planning ahead lets you look at the options calmly, with a counselor, and write down exactly what you chose.
What to compare
- Metal caskets are made of steel in different thicknesses (gauges), stainless steel, copper or bronze. Finish, interior and hardware vary.
- Wood caskets range from simpler woods such as pine or poplar to hardwoods such as oak, maple, cherry or mahogany.
- Urns for cremation come in metal, wood, stone and keepsake sizes, and some are made to go into a niche or a grave.
- Outer burial containers (a vault or grave liner) may be required by the cemetery. Ask before you choose.
- Memorial items: the marker or headstone, register book, prayer cards and flowers.
Your rights when buying funeral merchandise
Under the federal Funeral Rule, the funeral home must give you price lists for caskets and outer burial containers before you look at them, and you may choose only the items you want. You can also buy a casket or urn elsewhere, and the funeral home must accept it without an extra charge. Billy will walk you through the funeral home's price lists at the meeting.
